I took a ride over to Willows today for a pheasant hunt. We stopped off at the bird guys farm and picked-up 9 birds @ $12 a bird.

We went and planted the birds on a harvested rice field and then went for breakfast at "The Bear" in Willows. Great grub and plenty of it!

We got back to the rice field and started hunting the birds we planted. We went 9 for 9, which ain't too bad if you have ever planted birds before. Usually one or two either fly off and make it for freedom, scamper off and you never find them, or a hawk or coyote eat them.

I brought all three home and breasted them out. Next stop is the smoker for them next week.

CHEERS!

Sweet.  Brine them in an apple juice brine and smoke them whole.  Finish at 500 degrees for about 10 minutes to candy the sugar on the surface...holy crap is it good!!!

The dog does look happy!  Did Parker the Barker get to go?

I wasn't brave enough to bring my labs. I may bring them if I go back in the next three weeks. They did get a kick out the birds when I got home and threw them in the front yard. I just don't know how they would do with shotguns going off.
