We were supposed to go camping/kayak fishing for the Thanksgiving week. The weather suddenly turned much colder so we canceled. My son and I went out on the New Sea Angler from Bodega Bay instead. We landed three Humbolt squid and lost another two. Our biggest was estimated at 60 pounds. It was amazing how hard they fight. My son and I were trading off on the 60 pounder it took so long to get it in. The people on the boat said the squid are much more aggresive in December and it is common for everyone to catch as many as they want. I now have about 40 pounds of 1 inch thick calamari steaks. I need to figure out how to cook them.

My son was very impressed. He's never caught saltwater fish before.

Spice them up with a little salt & pepper. Squeeze a little lemon juice over them, egg wash them and coat with bread crumbs. Fry in a little olive oil and enjoy!!! :smt003

Nice squid - I can't wait to go again.
When you prep them, you MUST MUST MUST get the membranes off BOTH SIDES of the mantle. On the outside, there is the skin, but also a saran wrap-like membrane that you need to peel off - this takes some practice.

There is also a membrane on the inside that's more tender and not as easy to get off, but do your best with it.

As for cooking, dip in eggs, then bread crumbs with spices and fry in olive oil.

Or, marinate in any sort of concoction you like and BBQ the squid steaks...I did this a few weeks ago and it was great.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

The squid were at 700 feet. Usually they will follow the first few catches up to the surface where it is much easier to pull them in. They weren't coming up yesterday so we had to pull them up and it was very hard work. Rick Powers was the skipper. They said the squid are much more numerous and aggresive in Dec.

The steaks I have are about 1 inch thick. I just finished slicing up a couple pounds and am soaking it in milk. I will be frying it up this evening. Egg and  garlic breadcrumbs, cooked in olive oil.
