As a former Sonoma County resident, the news of the spill in the bay makes me sick. With that said it appears our Govenator is closing the bay and asking the DFG to look into other areas that should be closed.

 :smt006  Howdy Riorust,

Thanks for the post.  The suspended fishing season sounds good to me until they clean up the whole mess and test for contaminants, but then, I'm not a commercial fishermen.   As if they didn't have enough trouble already.

I know we're all in a state of shock (and sick and angry) about this horrible spill.   Who wouldn't be.

On a much lighter note, I remember my "favorite" spill.   We had a little college at Fort Cronkite just around the North point of the Golden Gate in the early 1980's.   There was a big storm one night and a tug cable broke off from a huge shipping barge.   The next morning dawned sunny and clear and the whole of Rodeo Beach was COVERED with nice cool fresh cans of beer!  :smt007  I forget what kind of beer it was.  Somehow my memory got a little muddled at that point...  :party  -Matt

 :smt006 Hi David,

We rowdy college students waited until that night.   I was the next day that hurt.  :smt002  I wonder how the spill cleanup is going.  -Matt :smt004

Here's a good article about the spill, one week after the accident, from the SF Chronicle.  What struck me most here is that with all the modern electronics on board (but radar on the fritz!) the only reason the ship may have not crashed head on into the pylon was because the lookout on the bow saw them heading straight towards the pylon and he yelled and rang an alarm bell.   Hard to even imagine what may have happened if the ship had hit head on!

I'm glad the Govenator is so pissed.   I hope he kicks some butt like in the movies. :smt002  -Matt

He doesn't care one bit either way.  If he signs the EO it looks like he's pro public safety lookin out for the people....politics. I'd be more impressed if he started exploring programs to handle situations like this....prevention, clean-up...etc.
..........agarcia is just an ex-kayaker

Well I heard we do have an Office of Oil spills or something like that. I guess an audit report showed it was understaffed and ill prepared last year. He did nothing then. I bet he gets more political capitol by responding to the disaster then by working to prevent it/handle it better BEFORE it happens.
