Depending on ocean conditions...

If it's rough almost anywhere in Bodega Bay itself can work for crab.  Note that I'm not talking about Bodega Harbor but the area of water between Tomales Pt and Bodega Head.   If you go out during the opener you'll see tons of guys in small boats out there trying for crab.  Find a place among the boats and have fun.  Generally I look for the deeper holes in the area that are about 40-60ft deep and soft bottom.  If you get too close to the jetty, or other rocky structures you'll catch rock crabs.   Relatively easy launches at Doran Beach ($) or Campbell's Cove (free).

If it's calm, you can try out in front of Salmon Creek - Carmet.  This is an area of beach about 5 mi north of Bodega Bay on Hwy 1.  Be careful as the beaches here have a pretty serious surf break and shouldn't be tried in rough seas.  However this area in about 60-100ft of water is prime crab territory.

If those fail to produce, Pisanno Brothers in Bodega Bay is where most of the commercial guys off load their crab.  They keep the really nice ones there (2 1/2+ lbers) at the wharf and will sell them live to the public.  Of course the commercial season doesn't start for another week or so after the rec season starts so you might want to give them a call, their number is 707-875-3576.

No one ever has to know.    Bodega Bay- "a small drinking town with a fishing problem".
