I took my son out to the Russian river and he sat in the back of my kayak, does anyone use a seat for the back of the outback? There was a guy that I remember from a while back that had a seat that could screw into the bolt of the kayak. I just bought a GSI seat from Amazon but open to suggestions on seats for the kayak. We had a lot of fun didn’t go to far from steelhead beach because the current was ripping in certain parts. Also talked to 2 boats, 1 landed a beautiful 34 in steelhead and the other released a native 32. I really didn’t think the Russian river was that easy but they made it seem so.

I rigged an old Ocean Kayak seat for my son in the tankwell of my AI by clipping the seat to the guides that the shock cord go through and the back to a couple of zip ties that go around the rear crossbar. I'm sure you could do something similar with an outback. These aren't the greatest pics,  but if I get a chance I'll take some close up pics from home.

1. Did you say you got the GSI seat off Amazon? I couldn’t find that seat, but it’s possible there was a typo and you meant the GCI Outdoor canoe seat. Seems like that would work and could be secured with bungees if you just want to keep it simple. You could also crest some type of base or mount if you wanted it up higher?

2. I never tried it when I had my Outback, but I think the Jackson kayak seats are supposedly a good fit with some mods…here’s an example, just mounted in the traditional seat spot rather than the rear tank well.

3. By referencing Nowhereman’s posts, I followed his lead and made a PVC, bungee, and fabric seat for my older AI. While I love the seat I made, it cost me over $100 to build and let’s be honest, PVC functions fine but can look cheap. That said, it gets me up and out of any pooling water, but not so high that I’m even with the deck and compromising stability. You can make one using whatever dimensions that the tank well on the Outback requires. It’s also removable, which I think is a plus.

This seat looks awesome! What size pipe did you use, and how sturdy is the seat back?

It’s got some flex, but it’s held up and seems sturdy enough to go the distance. I used 1/2” schedule 40 PVC. You can’t see in the photos, but there are carabiner attachments securing the seat to the pad eyes.

I am trying different seats out from Amazon. I tried the GSI canoe one didn’t like the straps on it meant for a canoe. Also tried a harmony seat meant for kayaks but it was too thin. I am trying the islafeliz seat next. Hopefully this one works out. Trying to spend under $50 bucks. That seat looks cool but I don’t want to do too much work for this and trying to keep it under 50. Thanks.

Sweet, thanks for this!  Anything you wish you'd done differently?  What did you use for the mesh/fabric?  I'm looking at seat options for my old Santa Cruz - this looks like a great option.  I already have a bunch of PVC stuff, and can probably almost build the frame with stuff from my stockpile.

If you want to save money, I just used multiple bungee cords instead of fabric/mesh, with a seat pad that rests on top of the bungee cords. I also reinforced the seat bottom with a brace similar to the one in the middle of the back in See-bree's second picture, which reduces the flexing. Finally, spray painting the PVC is a good idea, both for UV protection and to make it look less cheapo. If you want to paint it black, I've found that this paint works great on PVC (be sure to lightly sand, especially the shiny fittings, and then wipe down with rubbing alcohol before spraying):

A child booster seat!  It fits perfectly back there facing the rear, you can bungee them down, they are plastic, usually padded, and sometimes come with a cup holder.

That’s a good idea I need to make sure it’s low enough so it doesn’t tip. I also saw a guy who made a little camping chair and put bungees through it on amazon but it seems like that might flip over. He kinda likes to move around and put his hand in the water.

Here's a pic of my son a few years back with a nice ling at the cove.  You can kind of see the booster seat.  It worked perfectly on the outback.   Good times :smt001
