OCEAN SHORES, WA

While the ocean vessel 'Dawn Raider' was commercial fishing for dogfish, this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15 minutes before it came up alongside the boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope aro und it's tail !!!  The Shark took off towing the 42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 knots. Just like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern and the crew watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the water at times. This went on for an hour before the shark finally drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS. It is suspected she followed a weak El Nino current into local waters in search of food.  Although mid 60 degree water i s considered ideal for these sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

Sorry BigDog, that's a Mako and the story is a hoax. It was a shark derby in Nova Scotia.

BTW. The Great White is a protected fish and if someone was dumb enough to tail rope, kill, and display it like that they'd be paying a pretty penny and probably jail time.

Thought I smelled a fishy story there. Mythbusters did an episode about what happened in the movie JAWS and most if it was busted. Especially the part about the shark pulling the floats underwater and the boat being pulled backwards and water coming over the stern.

Thank the internet for the piles of B.S. stories. Did you hear the one about Mr Rogers being a Navy Seal?

I think thoes shark derbys are rediculous. a little too much testosterone on board if ya ask me.  Now a bet between a bunch of guys who can catch the biggest fish using a mickey mouse/barbie pole separates the real men from the boys. Not who can yank in a giant shark on their boat, kill it and think they are somebody because they killed an awesome predator such as a giant shark.

About Mr. Rogers, I heard he was a Marine Corps Sniper and he had full sleave tattooed arms which is why he always wore long sleaves on is show.  RIP Mr. Rogers!  :smt066 :smt067 :smt070 :smt071  But when he died they did a biography on him, none of that even close to true.

Sorry about that. I got that in an email early this morning. I wasn't awake enough to think to check it on snopes.

Did the Wash. press cut and paste to make a bigger story or what?

See the long "fish-grabbing" stilletto like teeth.
Not the triangular "bone-saw" teeth of a GWS.

The Mr. Rogers story, & dozens of others, are addressed at www.snopes.com.  Great place to debunk most of the urban legends circulated by email.

The Wash. press didn't write this. Some knucklehead wrote it on their computer.

GWS is protected in CA, perhaps not in WA though.  I remember when one got trapped in an estuary out east somewhere they enacted a temporary closure of GWS so someone wouldn't kill it.

Wonder if that bit is true that they prefer water down to the low 50's, perhaps we shouldn't complain as much when it's in the 40's.  ;)

While white sharks and makos do have some similarities, the teeth are a dead giveaway. Makos teeth are very pointy and the white sharks are more triangular.

A bunch of idiots with little d***s.

I bet it would be more challenging to hook, land, and safely (for the shark AND fishermen) release a large shark than to kill it.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
