Will someone please tell me the difference (advantages and disadvantages) between Scotty and RAM rod holders, other than personal preference?

I have used both, and overall I prefer the Ram, as it allows more options for positioning. Due to its design, it allows an infinite number of positions between its range, and can be manipulated to put the Rod in the most convenient place. Also, due to the design and length of the reel holder, I have more options on where to put the rod in relation to the ball mount itself. I have one mounted centerline between my feet on my P15. For example, for trolling I can set the tip out to the left and up, out of my paddling arc, and  I can position my reel off to the left and in a way that I can take up or let out line with one hand and have quick access to the rod for when a fish strikes. Or for ease of getting on and off the boat, I can rotate the whole assembly forward, with the tip forward, most out of the way. Also, whether or not I have the reel mount assembly attached, I can use the ball or assembly as a tie down for my various lines.

The only advantage I have found to the Scotty, besides being a bit cheaper, is when the reel holder is not attached, it is more flush.

Plus, the RAM is made of metal, which means it is tougher.

You can get a ram ball that fits the Scotty mount
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

Hook1 (a sponsor) has the range of RAM mounts. Including the Scotty to RAM adaptor ball.

Scotty has a bit easier "draw" than the RAM, but the ram is more versitile in my opinion

I've got a Ram Rod holder, used it for about a year, and overall has been great. As far as versatility of positions you can put it in, I don't think it can be beat. The only drawback I've come across is if you use a planer (Pink Lady, Deep Six etc.) for trolling, it is really hard to keep it from slipping backwards. You really need to crank down the nut that holds it in place and can be a bit of a bummer when it's cold.

I use the Scotty for rod holders and would use the Ram for holding and positioning Fish Finders or GPS.

Just my 2 cents....

Never thought of that. Is it practical to link more than one of them together to get the fishfinder closer to me? Limited vision is the issue here.

Howard, contact Doug / Marmite...he has his FF set-up on a "swing arm" - I'm not sure if this was something he made himself but I've seen him use it and it seems to work well.

I've bought both the Scotty's and both type's of Ram mounts. The rams are nice for fish finder mounting(mini-ram on my Humminbird) because of the adjustability. For holding rods in front of you they are good, again because of the versatility. But I don't trust the ram tubes behind you trolling for larger fish like salmon etc.they tend to slip and are not easy to access fast enough if they do. Some guys rough up the ball for more friction. In the rear I would rather have a flush mount or a scotty because of the mechanical locking. For smaller fish like Trout,Koke's,Bass, it shouldn't matter.
