Ok so an update of sorts...
The dual band chirp unit seemed to work well.

I ended up getting a vivid cv as a gift,
Now this xducer is in the same spot, wont read dept.
Everything else is ok.
Did I get a bad unit?

I'm going to be selling the base model off later, once This is ironed out.
I suppose I could have air in the duct sael to hull interface.
Going to try and redo it as a verification first.

I like to goop the transducer to the hull, inside a ring of pool noodle (which itself is gooped to the hull). I recently sold a kayak and pulled the gooped transducer out and cleaned it up. It was nice to see that there were no air bubbles in the dried goop.

I don't think a gooped-on transducer would ever come off by itself, but it was not too difficult to remove from the hull. Pealing the goop off the transducer took some effort, but turned out to be easier than expected...

I'm thinking that I didn't have it parallel to the water line.
The first one was working properly and stuck down well.
That might be a better option for this longer xducer tho...
Thanx

Still fighting with this turd.
It either won't read depth, or picks a random depth to stop reading as you hit shore.
As in
Being in 3 ' of water visually,  but sounder still reads 8.9"
On 2d
Down scan = zero read anywhere.
Calling garmin tomorrow

Doubt Garmin can help unless there is a real issue with your unit other than offering the following advice....

You probably don't have your transponder mounted correctly. Since your kayak doesn't have under hull mounting provisions it needs to be either attached inside the hull with a bubble free glob of goop or silicone or be mounted in a water bath made up of some cut up Tupperware ware, foam or whatever vessel can hold it in water against the hull. To rule out electronic glitches or other issues you can hold the transponder in the water outside of the kayak and confirm if it can or can not read depth.

I postponed my first FF purchase for many years but don't be discouraged once you get this set up and are able to become comfortable with the tech upgrade it will change the way you fish.

Highly likely your right.
However I had zero issues with the first one mounted exactly the same way.

An aside,
 hold that thought....

What is the depth set to? Mine gives wacky readings sometimes. If I put a downrigger out it will often read that as the bottom. I find changing the depth setting will bring mine back in line but it is still a pain.

The depth is set on auto.
I noticed that the 1' shallow water alarm wasn't working when I parked on a shoal.
It was still reading depth.

Got home and ran the diagnostic,  found a
Report of improper shutdown or something.
Did a hard reset at home, need to go hit the water

Edit 11 may
Garmin sent a new unit, I am just about positive that the in hull is the issue,  weather it's the interface or the actual hull material is to be seen...
