I have 2 questions about crab gear regulations
   1)  do I still need to use 2 buoys with ambush pots and crab rings?

   2) can I just take the tops off my Danielson box traps and use them instead of crab rings?

Thanks to Paul for lightening the load on my hoop nets.
Ridiculous as it is to have separate regulations for the same issues of "entanglement ".

It's probably because there's no difference between kayaks fishing and recreational power boat.

Neither state's vessel.

The ambush/hoop nets function differently than box traps, and therefore have different rules. Notice that the regs also state that ambush/hoop nets can't be left unattended for more than 2 hours. Presumably, this would require the user to stay nearby, and therefore:
1. Allow them to respond, or at a minimum report, any mammal entanglement. They should be in the area and notice rather quickly.
2. Be located nearby to alert other boats that your nets are out, so that they can navigate around them. This is why I think they allow for one small float vice a large float and small float combo.

For box traps only.  Hoops are free... :smt006

I like the two floats on my ambush traps too, makes ID and retrieval easier.  Also, if I want to switch to box traps - easier to just move the whole line.  Though I should re-paint my red/white buoys this year - any paint recommendations appreciated...external house latex?
