So I'm not set on trying this yet, but even though crabbing season is coming soonish here in California, I've already got the itch and as I have some surprisingly free mid-week time, I'm actually thinking of driving up to Oregon to go crabbing in the next week or so.

If I find a promising enough spot, I may even skip the kayak and just do crabbing from the shore (most of the good kayaking would probably require a further drive into middle/northern Oregon, and I was hoping to keep the trip under 8hr drive so snaring might be the way to go I'm thinking).

But before I even try this, I want to make sure I'm able to safely bring my catch back. Does anyone know specfics of this or has anyone here ever brought crab back over?

My immediate concern is if I'm lucky enough to limit, I think I may have to adhere to California 10-crab limit (possession) since I couldn't prove easily that I caught the crab in Oregon (12 limit?)

That in itself is no big deal if I have to stop at 10.

Also have questions about live vs dead crab. I'd much rather bring them back live, though if I had to I guess I could haul up my cooker and cook/prep them up there.

I don't even know/remember if they check for this stuff at the border - it's been a while but all I ever remember them asking before at the checkpoint (if they even stopped you at all) is asking if you had fruits/vegetables because they were mostly looking out for invasive bugs on plants.

But anyone have recent experiences?

They only ask about fruits and veggies at the border and the checkpoints aren't even manned most days so there is no checking at all. When I brought my trailered power boat back one time they did look at it to make sure the drain plug was out and there was nothing growing on it. They never ask about my kayaks however. I have brought back cooked and cleaned crab many times without problems.

Also be aware that you need to get an invasive species permit for your kayak in Oregon and if the inspection checkpoint is open after you enter Oregon you have to pull over and let them inspect your kayak. When it is open they just put out a few signs that tell you to pull off the road somewhere. Here is a link about the invasive species permit:

I live on the border near Crescent City, so I cross it quite often. I have never been asked about having crab during the season even if I have my kayak in the back. Actually, they're only open about 1/2 the time.
