Bummer about the big fish.  But it sounds like you learned a lot for your first trip!  I'm sure being around the seasoned veterans helped the learning curve.  You'll get em next time!
If you ain't first, you're last.

my friends and I committed to doing a cool trip every year if we can.

next year is AK for halibut and salmon.

we all thought a tuna trip would be next.

how was it.  any seasickness?   you all just sleep in tiny cabins?  showers, or everyone goes feral?  (okay with that).

looks like you all used your own tackle?   could be the deal breaker for me and some friends...I assume we can rent gear from them?

The weather was unusually calm on this trip.  If you are prone to seasickness, make sure you have meds you know work for you.

Bunks in staterooms, shared with 2-3.  You're only down there to sleep anyways.

There are 2 showers.  Very usable and not overly crowded.

You can rent tackle from the landing or the boat, depending on which boat you are on.

The yellow spectra curse is real……last thing you want to look over and see is this when a fish is pulling you down the rail.  I landed this one, despite having both those lines get wrapped with mine lol.

I should also add, orange spectra guy was a problem too……he actually got a special coaching session from the crew after his shenanigans lead to over half a dozen sawed of fish…..that jigs and fish gone.  One last note, it wasn’t metered spectra, it’s the dudes with a whole spool of one fluorescent colored spectra.

I think I hit that age where showers, shitters and sleeping arrangements matter lol. The best accommodations are on the big boats that do long range but slip in the shorter 2-3 day bluefin trips. They’re pricier but having a stateroom, AC, full size toilet and shower make a big difference when you’re below deck re-energizing for another grind at the rail.  As a bonus, you usually get a legitimate dining experience come mealtime.  The Islander has been great, checking off all the boxes and also being priced reasonably, best value so far.

Pssst ... Islander may bring back their kayak trips next spring.  Not BFT trips, but trips to San Clemente.  And we'll be putting together an NCKA trip when they do.  Stay tuned.
