Going out to Half Moon Bay Pillar Point on a tandem with my wife this Sat (weather permitting). We got a 40lb trolling motor and a bunch of hi lo rigs. Could anyone recommend a beginning strategy / spots to try for rockfish/lingcod?

Do you have the Navionics relief map that shows the reefs? :smt006

At a minimum you can get the free version of Navionics on your phone and use that as a guide. I refuse to pay for the full version that really shows all the rocks and sand areas since they hiked the price year-over-year from $12.99 to $24.99 to $49.99.
In some conditions you do not want to cross the reef. It can cause breaking waves, etc. Better to skirt around it by heading towards the green and red buoys and then targeting the reefs from there. Halibut are also being caught in the sandy area.

Yes, I agree with Joe.  I have it on my phone and study it and use it for pinpointing my location on the water.  Then I try to think like the fish I'm targeting.  :smt005  The app is called Navionics Boating I believe.  The card may be way too expensive for the FF.  Hope you slay.  This is an example of HMB.   Otherwise your map on your FF should have some bathymetry capabilities.   :smt006

trolling motors are measured in lb thrust, so this one puts out 40lb of thrust

Must be electric as opposed to gas Wonder how that translates to horse power

Trolling motors are designed for thrust, not so much speed. A bigger trolling motor is designed to move a bigger boat at the same speed as a smaller trolling motor on a small boat, unlike Gas engines which are propped for specific RPM and pitch is increased or decreased to do so, trolling motors generally share pitch and diameter is the variable. Think about it like this; increasing a trolling motors thrust rating means bigger diameter prop which moves more water the same speed vs a bigger gas engine which uses a higher pitch prop that moves the same amount of water faster.  A 40lb Thrust motor is rated around roughly 410 watts (12v to 13v * 32a) = 0.55HP

Good description how a trolling motor makes power vs a main propulsion engine.

For reference, I have a transom mount 40lb trolling motor on my 13' Gregor V-hull, and it makes about 2.5 knots at full speed. It takes it about 20-30 seconds to go from dead stop to that speed. With a group 27 battery, I can troll for trout pretty much all day.

If my boat was lighter, I bet it would accelerate faster and the battery would probably last longer. I imagine a 40lb trolling motor probably pushes a kayak along pretty well.
