New Brighton 6/14-6/20

Will be camping this week at NB State Beach. We went last year and I didn’t take my kayak, but bringing it this year.  Anyone else going to be around?

Any advice? Based on what I saw last year halibut were around. I’d prefer the simplicity of rock fishing but not sure how productive that would be.

Walk the beach and toss striper plugs or HairRaisers.

Launching at new Brighton is always discouraging to me because they don’t open the day use lot until 7/8am(not sure exact time). As well as it’s a bit of a walk to the pedestrian ramp onto the beach. There’s stairs with closer beach access than the ramp near the bathrooms on the beach. it’s totally doable though. Pretty small waves there unless there’s major nw/sw swell. There’s definitely halibut in the area, seen some nice ones caught of the rental skiffs in capitola recently.
Went fishing from the beach there a few weeks ago caught 7 short halibut (the size of sand dabs) between my friend and I. As well as a bonus 16” striper. Tide look pretty nice in the afternoon & evenings for surf casting, tho the south swell could make the beach a bit grassy.

You can park in the residential area across Park Ave, then wheel your kayak across the street and railroad tracks (do-able with a lightweight kayak and/or with help).

The trail from Bay Ave down is not very easy but doable. Last year- I anchored (hid) my yak down there the night before and walked in. It is a bummer they don't open ealier- I'm going to write them a letter to see if they might consider. I live right there.

You can always put in at Cap wharf and paddle over- it's not that far and you can grab a couple rocks on your way there/back.
