I am going to be in hawaii for the next week and am taking a few small spinning setups.  I was going to try to throw some small jigs/lures from the beach.   Anyone have any advice?

bring a surf rod with some surface lures and swim baits, might catch an ulua[that is a giant trevally or jack to us mainlanders].  there are plenty of fish to catch there, one night my brother and i caught a bunch of reef sharks on kona.

I wish I could bring a surf rod with me but I dont have anything to put it in.  I can fit my spinning rods in my suitcase.

My dad and I had fun catching reef fish from the shore a few years ago.  We just cut squid into strips with small (#2, I think) bait holder hooks.  Sliding sinkers and 12-18" leader.

We caught and released a dozen fish in a short time.  Some of these reef fish can carry some type of parasite/disease/I dunno what that will get you really, really sick.  Ask before you eat.

Have fun.

You can get ciguratta from the reef fish.  Nasty stuff.  Anyway, you're on vacation, don't want to be cleaning/cooking wierd little fish.  Release those guys and pack home some ahi and mahi mahi from a six-pack trip.

I brought a rod/reel last time, but never got around to using them.   I did break my led 2/3 of the way through and that put a damper on things.  Snorkeling with the fish was more fun IMO than catching them.

Here's a secret, bring a dive knife snorkeling and get away from most of the other people (they might object to what you're gonna do for a variety of reasons) now go postal on the sea urchins (they're everywhere).  The reef fish can hear the crunch of an urchin from 100ft away, and it sounds like the dinner bell.  You'll quickly have a frenzy of several hundred fish, even the ones that were shy before will be bumping against your hand trying to be the first at the urchins you crack.  Now you've basically created a bait ball and the big fish will come to check it out.  Be careful not to break too many at once or things get kind of scary.
