I just don’t wear it.  Bought it when I was bigger.  Then exercise and a cleaner diet…. Here I am.

I’m going to wear it tomorrow. My wife asked me to.   It’s huge.

I need to buy farmer John’s or something.  How do you all dress for the salty water?   I’m going to take catching fish to eat more seriously.

Congratulations on the weight loss — 40 lbs is no walk in the park! I’m still new to this sport, but I thought I’d share my input. I highly recommend a Farmer John-style wetsuit, since you’ll need to pee and won’t want to take everything off. Mine is 3mm, and I wear a thin nylon long-sleeve shirt over it. I also bring a soft-shell jacket for early morning launches, but by midday, it’s usually too warm for it. Good luck!

Keep wearing and get a stretchy belt. Dry suit in the salt is the best. Gaskets can be resized if it is a good brand. Or, trade with a formally thin guy that gained 40lb :smt044 Happens. :smt006
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Congrats on losing 40 lbs. I really need to lose 10-20 but haven’t made progress. I believe in wetsuits since the most likely time I’d go overboard is when kneeling over the Hobie hole with my fly open. I’ve been in the water in a dry suit not properly zipped and it is no longer a dry suit.

A wetsuit will work, but a drysuit (or semi-drysuit) is so much more comfortable, that it's hard for me to imagine going back to a wetsuit. My experience is that once you get wet, sitting on your kayak in a wetsuit in cool/cold conditions is the pits.

The only hassle with a drysuit is that the layering is on the inside. If it warms up and you need to strip off a layer, you might feel like Houdini trying to escape from a straight jacket while standing on a balance beam. But, that's minor compared to freezing your buns off.

Wetsuits swim better than drysuits

Which won’t be relevant as long as you stay on your yak and dont take any unexpected swims

I've lost 100+ pounds, and still wearing my big ass dry suit  :smt005 Have to burp a lot of air before getting in my kayak though  :smt044

Damn you guys are bringing on the challenge! Most I ever lost was in the 50+ but after a while I found 30 of it again. Current effort I’m down 10 and need to drop 15-20 more. Life is so much better when youre lighter

With farmer johns controlling your body temp is easy Depending on conditions I carry a layer and a shell which means you have 3 options handy

Hot weather days i carry a loose shirt to throw on over the FJ to keep sun off

I need some good solid saltwater time

Nice work on losing a substantial amount of weight! I could lose a few lbs too ... Down about 5lbs this month, but need another 20 to get back to fighting weight.  I'm gonna be really happy when I get south of 200 again.

This is generally my strategy as well. Bring some layers, for warmth or sun protection.

hahaha..  true story.

my wife and I called it "I can ride the Mule again!!  but naked".   she has always dreamed of taking the mule ride tour down the Grand Canyon.  she went so far to read the info page.  clear as day.  it said, MAXIMUM weight of rider is 200lbs.    so when I hit 200, I proclaimed "I CAN RIDE THE MULE!"...my smart ass wife replies, "yes, but I looks like you will need to ride it naked".

now I can, fully clothed. :D

I just loaded my gear back into the garage.  the Dry suit was perfectly fine.  fun to burp.  it was cold all morning and I kept a hoody on underneath.  I think I can take the top off on the water.  I had shorts on the bottom.

I just rinsed the suit and hung it in the garage.  I LIKE IT!!   it is voluminous but very comfy.

thanks for the helpful banter.

Ha, funny story. I read it kinda fast at first, and thought maybe you and your wife had some kind of euphemism...

Was like "whoa dude, maybe a little TMI for a fishing forum" haha.

Glad the dry suit is gonna work out, even if a little big. Roomier is probably better - more room to layer for cold days.

Maybe I'm missing something, but here is my issue with wetsuits...

Suppose that I fall into the water, say, when launching in the surf (not that that would ever happen...). The wetsuit then gets wet inside, as it's supposed to. Then I get back onto my kayak, and I get cold (assuming the air temp is cold) because I'm all wet (literally).

Under the same scenario with a drysuit, I stay toasty warm.
