Hey all,
For those of you who recall, the Lookout Slough project removed access to Liberty Island. After much complaining we got them to promise us a boat ramp and parking area. I am happy to report they delivered! Parking area is on the end of Liberty Island Road, they made a loop and left spaces on the edge of the loop for parking and in the center. Parking is free. I would estimate room for around 15 vehicles (3 spots with room for trailers). There are no bathrooms.
The boat ramp is a long walk (about 200 yards) along the levee and past 2 gates. The gates are just high enough for me to get under with my kayak and cart, but it was a close fit. I was also able to go around the gate, but it was also a close fit.
The ramp itself is concrete blocks and accessible even on a very low tide. No motorized watercraft are allowed (but no one is there to enforce).
They have a few signs up (but one is falling down already) with maps of the area. Lots of channels have been carved into Lookout Slough, which look like good habitat. Although, I suspect they will fill up with water hyacinth or Primrose after a few years. From the boat ramp you can access Lookout slough area, Shag Slough, or the "Stair step" and then into Liberty Island. I caught a small mouth, a few bluegill, and we saw a lot of crawdads, but my traps failed to catch them. Others were fishing for stripper. Overall looks like a great place to paddle and while I'm not happy we lost access to Liberty Island, it's nice that we got something in return. Should be a good place to launch for duck hunting in the winter.
P.S. the area isn't listed on Google maps yet (and the satellite pictures are old), so get it while it's still "secret"!
