whats up fellas?

well I'm new to trolling for trout, Ive always fished for lmb, until last year i began targeting trout in the winter, i had some great days last year and i also had some days were i couldn't buy a bite. i normally troll a tungsten spoon or cast master, Ive tried rapalas but never had a hook up on one, what rapala do you guys use for trolling? i normally tie strait on no flashers or dodger. any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated, what lure you guys use color size?  thanks!!!

Yea! Bill?  that was the first trip I ever made in my yak and read it from from to back/upside-down, then inside-out. Went to shadow cliffs and BOOYAH!
My biggest trout to this day(Pic1)..a Lighting Trout that hit the "secret" lure.......shad rap

rule of thumb is 1mph per inch of lure being trolled= 3in.lure(3mph)

I've got them on a Rainbow pattern rapala(see pic)

...and a Needle-Fish tipped w/live-crawler piece(see pic)

i smear a little anise SMELLY JELLY on the lures for fun.

That's a good article, thanks.  But there's a lot of info I'd still like to figure out...

For example, how does water temps/thermocline inversion affect trout?

How deep will the most popular lures sink in popular sizes/weights at certain speeds?

How much line needs to be out, typically?

JFish, looks like you are doing well with what you got there, basically heavy casting spoons.

not sure you need any help!

but you could go with lures that aren't so castable, but have more action for trolling.

I think that is what you are missing in your arsenal.

check out this site:  http://www.seps.com/seps_tips.htm

examples are

o. really lightweight spoon, like a needlefish.

o. 2" of night crawler threaded on a small bait holder hook, pulled behind something shiny and
maybe with action.

o. a 1.5" grub.

o. a 7/8" berkley micro-nymph

o. yes, the shad rap.

you can put a dodger ahead of these things, or a set of flashers. you can smear scent on the flashers
or dodger.

you can put a power egg on your hook or a salmon egg while trolling too.

you can crimp weight ahead of the flashers to get them down a bit deeper.

you can make a cheap downrigger with 15' of heavy mono, a seps downrigger release, and a 2lb lead ball.
just hang it off the side of your kayak just ahead of your rod.

one thing you can do is use a small lure like a 1/2" fly or grub so any trout will hit it, but put it behind some flashers
so they can find it.

so I guess that's my suggestion, just play with the lures you couldn't cast, small no-weight lures.

that said, I once trolled a worm and dodger around for 1 fish and watched a guy troll two big kastmasters for two.

so maybe you should just stick with what you got!

For foothill lakes that have shad I use....copcar needlefish and once in a while cop car apexes. I use a trolling fin weight (1/8 - 1/2oz ) with ball swivel attached to a snap swivel on my main line and then go to a 4 to 5ft leader. I have a two rod stamp so I deploy two of the setups one on each side. I troll in large 's' turns at 1.2 to 1.3 mph. While trolling keep trap of whether the inside rod out outside is catching fish on the turn. The inside rod catching fish tells me either go deeper or slower. Outside says faster or shallow. You can fine tune from there. When trolling from my skiff with a partner we run 4 lines. One on the downrigger at 15ft, two on the spread, and one on a planer board toplined with no weight.

Oh forgot to mention...noodle rods are my preference. Trolling for trout and hogan stripers I exclusively use 7' catera rods and 4600 0r 5600 abu reels.
