We just bought a Star Rival Inflatable Sit On Top Kayak (NRS is having a 30% sale on lots of things, fwiw). It's like a SUP / Kayak. My wife wanted a water toy she could play around with on the water, but thinks she'll primary use it as a kayak (...she doesn't think she'll have enough balance to do a lot of SUP'ing). And we wanted a swim platform the kids could play around on, jump off, etc., for fun days on a lake.

Now we need to buy a paddle. Having one paddle for both kayaking and SUPing would be great! I personally am more interested in having a decent kayak paddle, and then just SUPing some times, and then in calm waters like a lake. I've only SUP'ed a couple of times (long ago), so I don't really know how to do it, although I used to surf a lot. But I don't plan to bring it in the ocean.

I have a Hobie Compass with Mirage drive, and I never use the paddle and don't have much experience paddling. It looks like it is possible to fish from the Star Rival. And my wife is interested in potentially fishing with me! We'll see. More likely, it will just become a kayak I can fish from when we go on vacation because it is easier to transport than the Hobie.

Any perspectives on the benefits / drawbacks of a Kayak SUP convertible paddle? And if I care more about the kayak part, any suggestions? The Perception Kayak Outlaw 3-Piece Kayak Paddle got some good reviews from Outdoor Gear Lab and Amazon (...although I'm always warry of online reviews).

Or is it just better to get two separate paddles?

The SOT kayak is supposed to be more of a toy for the kids and fam, so we don't need high end performance. But I want a paddle that at least will be OK and not cause frustration. I was hoping that would be in the $100 each range. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any perspectives!

The paddle for the SUP is quite different from kayak paddles.  I would buy 2 used ones for them.

I SUP a lot.  I have 3 cheapo Costco foam SUP's, but I also SUP standing on my X-Factors (XUP  :smt003).

I have a few SUP paddles, and they're good - especially the one carbon fiber model that I've had for years.  When I'm kayaking though, and I go into XUP mode, I just use my Werner Camano for the stand up paddling - it works fine.  You're just holding one of the blades instead of a handle.  If I were you I'd try that out, but it may be the case that the wife and kids would rather have an actual SUP paddle - I know that my W&K's prefer that.

There are cheapo SUP paddles - try one of those if necessary.

Best of luck~   :smt001

As eric said, you can make do with just about anything, but real efficiency will be driven by gear specifically fit for purpose.

This summer, my fam did the albion river.  My boy insisted we strap the kayak seat atop the inflatable SUP so he could toggle between the two modes of SUP/kayak.  It worked well enough for him to paddle both modes using the stock double bladed Hobie paddle.  I sure wouldn't want to cover big miles that way, but then again, I'm more of a gear hoe than some

Here's the kid using the SUP paddle in SUP mode, but with the kayak seat strapped in.  Guess he must have traded off with me...
