I've done pretty well with hoops since the opening of the season, but I've long been curious about freediving and just grabbing 'em. (Watching the below video definitely got me psyched, though my guess is crab density isn't that high).

I grew up snorkeling and am reasonably proficient diving, but I've never done it in Northern California.

Questions:

1. Where's the best place to go for water visibility? Was thinking Muir Beach, which isn't my best crabbing spot but is real calm around the cove.
2. Do people who have done this before use a dive light? Head mounted?
3. Are there other considerations I should keep in mind?

Otherwise, will try to update this post with success/failure.

This video warms my heart.  I used to night dive for dungees at that spot back in the early 90's.

I've done it a few times in Linda Mar cove but you picked a bad year to start considering the lack of numbers overall and the plethora of shorts. Good luck!

Cheers,

I can remember picking them up out of the surf at Dillon beach as a kid like 30 years ago. Maybe just go right outside the break of your favorite beach?

I've seen them at Albion on a low tide in the cove just walking around.

I've been thinking about doing this at Doran entering where the Jetty meets the beach. LMK if you want a buddy in exploration.
