Berryessa Mussel Inspection

So the new inspection program started the 25th. Motor boats must do a 30 day quarantine or pay for a hot water decontamination. Fishing kayaks with a motor must be inspected. Other kayaks and paddle boards are recommended to get the free inspection unless directed to do it by the staff. I’m not sure what the pass fail is for a fishing kayak with a motor. Are they looking for contamination in the cooling water inlets? Are they looking for moisture inside a sit on kayak? I wish they explained what it was they were looking for.

I hope that my AI with sail (no motor) is considered a kayak…

That is pretty excessive.

If it is anything like the Easy Bay Regional inspections and, like Del Valle, they simply look for water. A single drip can fail you.  I keep the kayak in the garage for a day or two before going and pull over just outside the park and wipe everything down.

The East Bay Regional folks look inside the hull at hatches, corners on deck, and in flush mount rod holders. If those spots are dry, they usually pass you. Sometimes they check the pedal drive, PFD, and other gear. East Bay Regional inspection folks are contracted through a statewide org specific for muddle inspections - I'd bet the Berryessa folks are the same.

Oregon does a hot water decon wash situation too, if they find any standing water. I don't think they charge you for it though.

How is Berryessa going to enforce a quarantine on non-trailered vessels?  Other places put a band on your winch tie down for a trailered boat ...

The 30 day quarantine is for power boats. Motorized fishing kayaks just need the inspection. My front hatch leaks pretty bad so it’s hard to keep it dry. I’ll be calling around and asking questions.

I went to Putah Canyon today and was able to pass inspection with a little condensation on the underside of my front hatch. They inspected it closely but let the condensation go. They used to leave their gate open and you could arrive early and pay the iron Ranger. Now the gate opens at 7:00 so they can inspect everyone.

Capell Cove launch is closed.

I called Markley Cove and got an answer machine that said their ramp is closed because everyone needs a 30 day quarantine. I left a message asking about kayaks because we don’t need to quarantine but they haven’t called me back yet.

Thanks for the info. I can't imagine power boaters wanting to drive up just to get the red seal and then return in 30 days. It would be a bummer if Markley or others go out of business because of this. Was the water discolored from the storms?

I was at Collins lake Friday and Berryessa wasn’t stained near as much. Not bad at all.

You can get a hot water decontamination and skip the 30 day quarantine. I wonder how it’s going to go next summer for the water skiers. Come to think the notice doesn’t mention jet skis.
