Fishing On the Big Island - Primarily Hilo Area

For Thanksgiving this year my family is taking a trip to the Big Island and will be staying in Hilo.  I’ve never fished in HI and was wondering if people have advice on how to fish from the beaches, jetties, etc.  My plan is to rent a couple of poles from the local tackle shop, S. Tokunaga Store, but also bring some tackle from home.
