Looking at the upcoming weekend and want to try to get in a camping/fishing trip.

Anyone been to eagle lake lately?

Anyone camped at Merrill Campground?

Any thoughts or suggestions for a different/better campground. Or camping/fishing area for the weekend?

I’m also kicking around the idea of lake Shasta, whiskeytown, or even shelter cove for flatfish since rockfish is closed. Pyramid is on my really short list too….

Sorta just talking it out in my head at this point. I’ve barely fished this year and I want to get out before the year is up!

I’m planning Saturday o’dark thirty for eagle. Shasta has been slowing don and fish spreading out a lot, whiskey has been a grind and a struggle for the past month with no relief. Reports from eagles are 7/10 bite, shallow thermocline and 65F temps in AM. Pyramid has been popping off offshore trolling or so I’ve heard. Tdad has flatfish too…haven’t been posting it outside of LCKA tho.

Many fishermen spend their lives chasing fish, only to realize that it was themselves that they were chasing.

The "Salty" in my handle refers to my attitude, not the waters I fish

Yeah this time last year pyramid was lights out downrigger trolling around 75 down. Jigging was good too. Was sorta wanting to try something new and have never gone to eagle lake.

The weather for eagle lake looks pretty darn good for the weekend. If  I end up deciding that the place for me this weekend I would love to meet up and pick your brain about fishing there!

Matsutakes are going VERY strong up here too, my buddy just gave me 3lbs, he did around 10lb this weekend. I may also do whiskey Thursday or Friday after work, 5-7ish planning to fish. Oak bottom area probably fishing stacked fish going up to French gulch to spawn.

It’s probably going to get better at eagle as the temps get to 55-50F or so. Maybe 2 or 3 more weeks till prime time. Mixed diet report recently, when they start settling down and keying in away from insects, it’ll get better.

I just saw a fly fishing post on Eagle Lake  - they caught but lots of possibly toxic algae.  Signs were up.

Saw this video last year sometime. I didn’t know there was Tuffa rock in Eagle Lake, or that they are full of shrimp the trout feed on often.

We used to anchor up and fish mealworms under a slip bobber, I’m guessing it was to imitate the little tuffa shrimp. Video was posted in the summer time, so not sure it will still produce in October, but thought it was cool enough to share. I’d love to try this with an ultra light spinning rod.

With gratitude and humility

Thanks for the tips everyone. I gotta dig thru my tackle box and see if I have some suitable tackle! If nothing else I’ll just drag threaded crawlers around and hope for the best.

Looking at campsites on the internet it looks like the ones open are first come first serve. I sort of plan on just driving thru the different ones and seeing what looks best.
