A limit in the bin, including a pretty big one

Fish were about 25.5 and 30.5 inches. I got some good baits on the way out to the mile buoy to start off. But the kingfish ate up all my anchovies and were taking out my Gulps fast. Gave up on that spot and headed towards the SpongeBob zone. Still no good bites, but I did find more anchovies over there along with a nice little jack mackerel. Joined up with a small fleet out in 35 feet or so. Wasn’t seeing a ton of bites, but some guys did start getting fish after 10 am.

Kingfish took all of my fresh anchovies so I put the jack mackerel on the top hook of my high-low rig and kept a 5 inch gulp on the bottom hook. Dragged that around for a long time with no takers. Was sinking into despair at around 10:30 when the first one hit the jack mackerel.

I could totally tell it was a halibut and a pretty good one. It put up a good fight, but I got it no problem.

Didn’t have any more good bait, so I just put a Gulp back on the top hook and got the second halibut not much longer after that. This one was wiggling around a little crazy and felt big. It was obviously a keeper And was hooked nicely enough that it withstood a bad swing or two of the gaff.

I was totally psyched and trolled the gulps little bit on the way back. I was able to pick up two brown rockfish. Spent the whole morning in fear of the landing, but it was no problem. Things were pretty calm.

Biggest challenge today was getting away from the kingfish.

Right on, thanks for the report!  Which Gulp baits do you use?  I've tried the4" and 5" grub/swimming mullets, but not enough to really have any luck with those.
