What we can fish for...

OK ....if I understand the Regs; the Special Regs; and the CRCA Regs correctly:

We can fish for:

Leopard Shark and Halibut in San Francisco Bay AND the ocean until November 30???????

Striped Bass.....anywhere.....???

Pacific Ocean perch and Sand Dabs.....indefinitely....???

The Sacramento/San Joaquin River DELTA.....is open to all fishing of all types year round???....catfish...crappie....bass....you-name-it???

The above are NOT STATEMENTS....I'm looking for confirmation.

Whatsmore....I have a really basic question:   I was looking in the regs for specific mention of Largemouth Bass.    All I found was specific mention of Black Bass.    Am I to understand that they are one-and-the-same...???...

Halibut is open year round, but become harder to find as the water cools.

Leopard shark is open year round in most of the bays (Bodega Bay, Tomales Bay, San Francisco Bay and maybe a couple others, I'll have to look them up).  However they are closed after Nov 30 in the ocean proper.

"Pacific Ocean perch" ... well that depends on what you mean.  That specific common name is a type of deep water rockfish that the commerical guys have really hammered.  However, you probably mean surf perch in which case there is no defined season.

"Black Bass" is a collective term for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and spotted bass.

Large mouth bass, small mouth bass and spotted bass all fall under the family of black bass.

why would leos be closed after November 30? I've never heard of this before.
I know Lings will closed but never heard of leos having a season.

Leopard sharks in the ocean are regulated by the PMFC as part of the federally regulated groundfish.

Leopard Shark

The recreational fishery for leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) inside San Francisco Bay, Bodega Harbor, Tomales Bay, Bolinas Bay and Drake's Estero Bay is open year-round to boat-based anglers, divers and shore-based anglers. Outside of the above-mentioned embayments, the fishery is open to boat-based anglers from June 1, 2007 through November 30, 2007. Outside of the above-mentioned embayments, leopard sharks may only be taken or possessed4 in waters less than 180 feet (30 fathoms). Outside of the above-mentioned embayments, the fishery is open year-round to divers2 and shore-based anglers. The daily bag and possession limit is 3 fish with a minimum size limit of 36 inches total length.

However, other places on the DFG site say that in the ocean, leopard shark season is regulated the same as the RCG complex.  This makes me wonder if they might actually be closed in the ocean north of Pigeon Pt now.

I wouldn't worry about all of that though, nobody really fishes for them in the ocean, just know that they are open year round in the bays and that the limit is 3 at 36".
