Bixpy currently has a 20% off Holiday Sale, the biggest sale I have ever seen.

Paul

That's tempting...

Try to input NCKA discount code to see if we get additional discount

Paul

Tried it and it works! Shipping is free, so total with tax comes out to $1035.64.

Now it's even more tempting...

Not sure what the actual specs on the battery are, but for the money, that is pretty impressive.  Very tempting...

Thank you for the heads up on the discount, Paul! I'm seriously considering it.

I'm curious why you guys with Bixpys chose that over other options like torqueedo or watersnake or [are there others]? I have done zero research into this so thanks in advance for anyone willing to help me shortcut the process. I own a 2021 Hobie compass.

I wrote this post some days back, more applicable to an Old Town kayak but I'm assuming there's stock hobie attachments too

Appreciated, Maethlin.  Did you consider the watersnake and reject it, or did you not look at that option? The price is right and the motor itself gets good reviews but many online reviewers seem to have difficulty getting it mounted correctly or something. The last time I was at HMB I launched around the same time as someone on a motorized kayak and as he left me in his wake I asked him what motor he was using, and it was a watersnake.

This is purely anecdotal but Bixpy seems to be the most popular among Hobie owners. There must be a good reason for that because it is much more expensive.

Yessir... absolutely considered watersnake, as well as minn kota endura as the two main options on the cheaper side of things. It all came down to mounting and ease for me.

I told myself I'd figure out good mounting options and watched oodles of videos and such on how various people approached mounting both those options. In the end, I figured I'd just never have the time/energy to actually do all that after a year of debating with myself.

There's also some nice safety/convenience aspects to the bixpy... you can operate it remotely with a controller you can strap to your hand/vest, and it's got an emergency killswitch mechanism you can attach to yourself as well so if you fall out your yak, the motor just cuts automatically.

But really it came down to the ease of mounting in a way that I could raise/lower the motor pretty easily and still use my regular pedal/steering as needed at the same time. If I didn't have a full time job and a million other things to do already I would have gone a more DIY route but in the end I just wanted to get something that worked and get on the water lol

Well, I'm in the same "boat" in terms of willingness/ability to spend a bunch of time on this. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Hopefully I'll see you out there with a new Bixpy soon!

Bixpy has a new model, the K-1. Not sure how it is better than the J-1 or J-2 yet. But with the battery, it is $1299, and you still need to figure out the mount, either DIY or possibly aftermarket. With tax and registration, this would end up costing almost as much as my Compass!

The Watersnake 24# is about $130 I believe, and a comparable battery is maybe $200-300. And there is some DIY with PWM/speed control but the PWM unit seems to be cheap, say $20-40. But you're talking about a third the cost of the Bixpy setup, if I'm not mistaken.

I forgot to ask you Bixpy owners: will the battery get you through 4-5 hours of salmon trolling at 3+ mph? If the battery then dies, I can pedal back to launch myself with fresh legs.
