Are they really using trawler data to estimate rockfish numbers? If so, that seems incredibly lame...

One of several sampling methods.  I don't know the details of which are used for Quillback, but NOAA does a lot of trawl surveys as well as hook and line surveys.  A good friend works on some of the survey runs.  I can try to get more info if there are specific questions.
