Got to the water at 9, set up ready to launch into small waves, got distracted talking to a couple right before launching, then with out checking the surf again, hit it. 30 feet out I saw the biggist freakin wave barreling in. Threw me all over and under the yak, paddle wasnt teathered thankfully, that could have been dicey. Lost all my swimbaits, jigs and jig case and another bag of lots of tackle. The beer was tied down. No lost poles, gaff, whaler or Hobie contraband case. Snapped my salmon net at the flush mount and snapped the flush mount inside the yak. Got a lot of sand in my ears, couldnt tell which way was up, I figured it was the oposite of the sand I was getting smushed into and was right about that. And without any tackle, called it a day.
The pentax was not shut and filled with h2o, bummer. Going out with the crew on Wed at the Bean for one last time. Revenge.

Whew!!! "beer was tied down." The man has his priorities!!!! The ocean givith, and it takith...bummer, sorry you got such a tough lesson. Not that it makes it any better, but I have made a commitment to store all my rods and loose things below deck on ALL surf entries no matter how small they appear. It's a hassel, but one unexpected wave can make all the effort worthwhile. I once was coming in on the smallest wave, totally underestimated it, and got dumped 10' from the shore. (it was at Muir beach too by the way) Didn't loose much except my pride, but it showed me how little it takes... got turned and flipped in about two seconds. I guess ocean yaking is alot like motorcyclists. There are two kinds of riders, those who have gone down and those who are gonna go down. Two kinda yakers, those who have flipped and those who are gonna flip. Sooner or later we all seem to pay up... A few weeks back I was waiting for the opening and got lazy with the yak, and allowed it to get sideways to the wash while I was waiting. It flipped, donated a few lures, and my favorite stainless needlenoses. rights of passage my man... glad you came out ok.

From now on, everything gets tied. I brought 3 rod/reels, not tied and still have them, the gods were kind to me. The tackle and jig case were bungied tightly, but not secure enough for a tumble.

Muir is kind of a dicey launch/landing.  I've only done it twice and I think I wiped out on one of them.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

I find it hard to say anything that does not make me sound like a smart ass.  Hmmm, I wonder what that means.

Tough lesson that we all need to learn and relearn once in a while.  Glad you are OK, gear can be replaced.

Maybe I am no such an ass after all  :smt005 .
