RPT Russian Gulch / Van Damme 7/21 & 22

Heading to Russian Gulch this weekend for fishing and camping, but the weather doesn't look good.
My wife and I will try the Russian Gulch Cove on Friday afternoon, and if we don't see any activities, we might try Van Damme protected area.

If all that fails you can always take a nice scenic trip up big river. Really beautiful river! Just try to plan your trip with the tides or it will take a lot more effort. Have a safe fun vacation and hopefully you can get out for some fish!

If it is too windy, we might do some hiking around.  My wife loves checking out wildflower trails.

It's been years since I've paddled u Big river but I distinctly remember the tri back down was a beoch due to the afternoon wind. The hotter it is inland the more afternoon wind.

can't go wrong up there.  I'd hoped to fish Albion this weekend - but weather is too much, so cancelled.

We arrived around 10:00 AM, and my wife and I peeked over the highway to check out the ocean condition.  It looks much better than the forecast.
We decided to skip the lunch and decided to launch ASAP.

We got into the water around 11:00 AM head toward the open ocean.  It was 5-6' swell with some wind.
We decided to stay close to the cove.  Within 30 minutes, I got slammed by 21" vermillion and was excited to open my season with it.  It took some extra effort to face the swell and land fish.  I returned to the same spot and got another one in 20"—enough fish for 6 adults for the weekend.  The wind suddenly picked up by 1 PM, and we decided to call it a day.

On Saturday, we decided to start early as high wind was expected in the afternoon; we fished from 8 AM to 11 AM catching 19" vermillion, a black and a blue rockfish.

The weather was wonderful at Mendocino, and we had a great time camping with two other families.

Awesome. Glad you were able to get out of the cove and catch some dinner! Looking forward to fishing Sonoma coast with you soon

how do you get your reservations at Van Damme?  I've not been able to get in to that location - probably just not reserving early enough.

You have to make the reservation 6 months ahead.
