Headed over to Trinidad next week. Looks like traps are still ok in zone 1&2, figured I would ask those who are more familiar with any changes than I am.

The CDFW Director will conduct an assessment of marine life entanglement risk for the commercial Dungeness crab fishery on or around June 21, 2023 using the Risk Assessment and Mitigation Program (RAMP).

I would recommend checking this site for easy access to current regulations: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Regulations/Fishing-Map/Northern

Locks like they completed another evaluation today with no new restrictions.

Anyone else have an issue with the theory of the "entanglement " part?
How does the item at the bottom change the way the rope "entanglement " happens?
+1 on signing up for the updates from cdfw (fish and game)
Any day on the water  beats being in town.

The idea is that traps can be left out unattended for multiple days, while a hoop can only be left unattended for two hours.  You're more likely to see your hoop net get entangled and report it so they can respond and remove it.

Ok that's a fair reason.
Sad to lose "traps " so much in recent years tho...

I hear ya.  For me, personally, I found I enjoyed hoops way more than traps.  I wound up selling all of my traps and enjoying the hoop process more than just swinging by my traps to check them on the way out sorta thing.  It does mean I no longer do combo trips (not that I couldn't).  I now go out solely to crab and that gets me more enjoyment.

I completely agree. I find the hoop nets way more manageable and fun to actively fish. And, I didn't see a huge decrease in keepers.

When I'm based out of the 5er, it's more of an aside (crabbing) to just enjoying the time off.
Having to stop fishing  to check the hoops is a pita, I understand the idea,  execution not so much.
Doing a 3 day soak, fishing 1 day, hang with the wife 1 and just relax 1... Checking hoops every 2 hrs is not conducive to "relaxation " but it's  the prk way.
I may be in the minority here though.
