Question: If I catch bluefin tuna on a charter boat, can I trade it for fishing gear?

Answer: No. It is not legal to trade sport-caught fish for fishing gear. California Fish and Game Code (FGC) section 7121 ( https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=7121.&lawCode=FGC ) prohibits selling or purchasing sport-caught fish – and the definition of “sell” includes barter, exchange or trade (FGC, section 75 ( https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=75.&lawCode=FGC ).

Perhaps you can make sense of the upcoming rockfish rueles for central area.  I'm getting different interpretations from some individaully savvy guys. I wrote about them in my newspaper column a few eeks ago and DFG jumped on me.  I asked them to show me where I was wrong and they couldn't really dothat. bag limits +date limits+depth limits+ specific types of RF at specific times of seasons....?

Yes I read the regs.  A few times... Stil confused when major charter boat operators tell me I got it wrong?

thanks

The DFW flyer isn’t a model of clarity. I found your article and you got it mostly right. Just to be clear, there is no boat based fishing inside the 50 fathom line for federal groundfish during the last 3 months of the year.  I don’t think that was clear from the article.

The language of the new law for you guys is here:

Let me know what isnt clear, I’m happy to get it sorted for you.

Thanks Crash.  That's actually fairly clear.  I might be getting fishlexic in my old age...

So Oct-December no boat fishing for rockies inside of 300 feet, and no take of fish described as "nearshore" while fishing outside the 300-foot line.

Appreciate it.  "Get by with a little help from my friends" will be the cutline for next week's column.

Right.  And the restriction is the 50 fathom line, described by waypoints.  The depth may or may not be 300 feet.

You can download files that will plot the 50 fathom line on your navigation software of choice and for google earth as well.
