It might have been a breeding horn -- I wasn't real close but that could have been it. Thanks for the information -- never heard of that before.

About the only place you’ll see American White Pelicans and Brown Pelicans mix is in brackish water like the mouth of the Russian River and estuaries. Their feeding methods are totally different adaptations; the browns plunge out of the sky in that classic dive, and whites swim in circles “herding” schools of fish together and dipping for them simultaneously. The commonality is feeding on densely schooling fish like threadfin shad in fresh or anchovies and mackerel in salt.
