With the rockfish season closure coming shortly, and the longer time until it re-opens, I am wondering about the habitat sole and halibut have been found along the mendocino coast where I fish. Any first hand accounts without divulging too much info ? I'm assuming 150' of water and a sandy bottom, just don't know if people are catching them here. Any tips on rigs, etc would also be appreciated!

Yes. Find sand that is around 100+ feet. For sand dabs use something like a sabiki tipped with small pieces of bait. For sole and halibut a bounce ball style rig with an anchovy works well. I would start with the bigger bait and if it’s getting pecked to pieces that means sand dabs are around so switch to a sand dab rig.

We were catching dabs, and petrale sole at Albion in 160-180 feet. Did better for large rockfish, and lings in the sandy areas than the reefs. They must of been looking for dabs.
