Hey

I just got my first kayak and was planning on going out tomorrow.   Got the bare necessities (Rearmed my PFD, dry bag, rope etc) but was looking for some friendly water recommendations to get acclimated to the yak on.   Something in or near Sacramento that has some decent fishing.  Plan on taking minimal gear just to be safe but was thinking the barge canal access in West Sac or lake natoma.  They both seemed pretty calm from the bank and didn稚 see much it any bait traffic.

Any recommendations?  Ideally somewhere with little boat traffic, current but not so desolate I知 completely alone haha.  Not going pre dawn or nighttime just itching to get out now that I pulled the trigger finally.

Thanks in advance!

Both are good, west sac is free. You can sometimes get a good fish in the deep water channel, lake Natoma not so much anymore.

As Jay said, West Sac is a good call. But do not leave anything valuable visible in your car. That parking lot can be a bit sketchy.

The striper fishing in there should be heating up. There's also king salmon trapped up against the locks if you want to try that.

If you get a chance, practice self-rescue.  This is one of the most critical skills you need and is best to practice in calm water or a swimming pool. Since I live in West Sacramento, please let me know if you need any help.

Thanks Paul.   I have heard this a few times and do need to.  Any ideas short of a swimming pool that would be ok to try around Sacramento?  Maybe Folsom near shore or Natoma?  Guess the water temp is going to play some role if I should or not this time of year.

Practice with your wetsuit/drysuit if you want to go fishing in the ocean.  You can practice at any lake, including Natoma and Port of Sacramento.
Make sure to watch some videos before the practice.

Thanks!  I知 not going to push it with the bay or ocean yet, mostly going to stick to the lakes and some more protected areas of the delta until I get a little more experience and confidence.  Do you think I need a wet or dry suit for those waters?  TBH I知 mostly a fair weather angler and if it痴 the dead of winter I知 usually huddled indoors lol.

I only do kayak fishing in the ocean and a wetsuit or drysuit is a must.  For freshwater, if the water is warm, you will be fine but if the water is too cold to swim in, I would recommend it.
