Can anyone recommend a floating kayak net?
Thanks in advance.

Fresh water? Ocean? Size?
For the ocean I slip a section of pool noodle over the handle.
Lost it once and did not know.
Radio shout out for a net found floating at Shelter Cove and I got it back.

It's for the ocean. Salmon fishing.
would like a net that I can control with one had.

I used to qualify a salmon net purchase with personal preferences... ended up getting a nice Frabill that I could manage - I think around 30" opening.  Well, I lost a couple magnificent salmon, and I got these losses on video.  The main thing I could point to in losing those fish, besides my heart pumping adrenaline and over-zealousness, was that the fish simply did not fit into the net -  you want the net to engulf them.  So I then took all of the advice on this forum in countless posts and got the biggest net I could find!  I managed to help the weight by sawing off a foot or two from the shaft.  To help with floatation, I jammed the handle full of pool noodle.

Here are some pics of pure heartbreak... As you can see, when half of the salmon is hanging out of the net, chances are not good.  I lost both of these beauties.

Completely agree with above post. IMO you can't go too big on a net for salmon. I've lost big fish on smaller nets.

The larger, 'salmon-sized' ones typically aren't floating models. You'll probably want to do that yourself. Having recently lost my salmon net in a surf-related landing (large one as seen in my profile pic), I had to recreate one.

So I bought the largest, tear-drop shaped one at OPS. I then cut the handle down to 'kayak-size' and added some flotation. So far, so good.

My handle is also cut to kayak size.
A section of pool noodle is around the handle so I can easily get all of the net under water.
Skip to 3:06 in the vid to see what I mean.
After this outing I bought a much bigger net right when I got home.

Get the net that works for you, or find one to modify as needed like cutting the handle down to size then make it float.   :smt006

Just stuff foam pool noodles in the handle.

I was very happy with the large Frabile that I used for many years until the hoop corroded out. I replaced it with a big ass Beckman and am very happy with the quality. I thought I wanted the teardrop shaped hoop but in some practice swipes in the store I liked the regular hoop style better.

Pool noodles make it float. I actually like them on the hoop itself instead of in the handle. I can let the hoop float on the surface with the handle in my lap if a fish shows it's not ready to net yet without the net wanting to sink. You'll find something that works for you.

Cheers,
Brad

Leaving the net in the water while bringing the salmon in is a bad idea.  Beckman does make great nets, but the one I own with the weighted sock it just too big for use on the kayak.

I don't like leaving it in the water and I don't grab for it until I think they're ready, but sometimes they make a run and strip 10-20' of line off when it first sees the net. I'd rather focus on getting that line back than putting the net back, reeling the line in, grabbing the net again and maybe losing the fish. We each have our approaches that work for us.

Cheers,
Brad
