I just got a new shark shield (Type C) and after 5 hours, it starts beeping, which continues for the next hour or so, until the battery dies. I find the beep extremely annoying and was wondering if there might be an easy way to turn it off (or even just mute it by a lot) without damaging the unit.

Back story:

I bought my first shark shield in 2011, and it worked great until last year. Once it went kaput, I thought it was the battery, so I took it apart and tried to wire it to my FF battery. That didn't work, and I now suspect there is a more serious problem with it. I've still got it, and plan to try to diagnose the problem at some point, but never seem to find the time.

Earlier this year, I bought a used shark shield from FuzzyTom's, but never used it. So, I resold it to Bushy after his close encounter in Santa Cruz. Then a couple days after I sold that SS, my wife read some report about a shark attack and asked if there was anything that would prevent such an attack. I mentioned SS, and that I'd previously had a working one, but sold it (I didn't mention that I'd sold it just 2 days prior...). She said that I probably should get one, so I bought a new one, which arrived 2 days later.

I was at Moss Landing earlier this week, when some PB guy announced over channel 11 that he'd just seen a huge GWS, and that it had bumped the bottom of his boat. I was glad that I had a SS that day!

Oh the beeping…the beeping…madness!  I guess we signed up for it.  I’m getting mine modded and I hope it never beeps again… :smt006

Nice. I’m reluctant to open it up since it’s brand new, but a couple more beeping outings and I bleeping will do it!

If the beeping starts to bother me I put it out the side of my kayak, rather than through the scupper hole, so the head unit is submerged.

Well, if you’re willing to desolder the little speaker from the board, you can add a reed switch inline. That way you can turn off/on the speaker by a magnet. You may be able to leverage the red knob to help you. You may be able to position the reed switch near the magnet under the red knob, such that both the SS and the bypass are turned on at the same time. I did something similar to my volt meter mod.

On a different note, my model “C” started acting up. That unit had only been used 3-4 times. It took me some time to figure out and fix the issue. I believe it is a common issue on the SS. I’ll have a write up on that when I get back home in a week. Corrosion is an invisible problem that many SS suffer from.

Had never heard it beep before yesterday, but putting in 7.5 hours yesterday otw, it did.  I didn't read the manual, as most techie guys never do.  It seemed to beep infrequently for a few mins, then every like 30 seconds?  That was annoying for sure and helped me decide to call it a day, transiting the water I worry about on the way back into the harbor... beep... beep... beep...  and a frigging dolphin scared me when it surfaced  :smt005

I don't remember my old SS being so annoying. It seems like that one didn't start beeping until it was just about to run out of battery, so it was just a short while of enduring the beeps. This new one starts beeping when it's still got 20% battery life, and that's a lot of beeping to endure.
