In dense fog sometimes your GPS wont update fast enough for you to track in a straight line if your using it to navigate.  I've gone in a complete circle before trying to use it.  Then a compass is a lot easier to stick to a specific heading, but you still have to know what that is.  Getting lost in the fog is pretty easy

Good point, btdt. A deck mounted analog compass is preferred, but a small handheld type can do the job when necessary.

Another option is to deck mount a handheld compass. I attach one to the center hatch on my Hobie, where it's easily visible and out of the way. And I carry a second handheld compass in my pfd. So, nothing fancy or expensive is required, compass-wise...
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

I had the same problem with fog.
Got an expensive Hummingbird with a screen the size of a laptop (just kidding; but it’s big and heavy).
Solved the fog and many other problems.
Highly recommended.
