Sounds like fun. I still have my guns but no license. Hope you do well.

Seems like everyone I talked to did well on the opener... except for Stu, Fuzz, and I.  It was the worse dove hunt ever.  We nailed only bagged 3 birds between the 3 of us.  We hunted the Los Padres National Forest just on the other side of Fort Hunter Liggett near King City.  It was weird.  There were absolutely no birds around.  Usually, you'd have easy limits by 7:30.  I could have killed more doves in my driveway with a pellet gun. :smt012

Jack... I seriously want to try it this year.  Where do you usually go?

Hey CHuckE, Bair Island in Redwood City, part of the Don Edwards wildlife refuge, allows waterfowl hunting along outer Bair Island... access is easy from the boat ramp at the Port of RWC... how about we get a small posse of 2-4 yakhunters and hit the opener (or soon after)?  I've got about 18 dekes which is plenty for a small spread...  I want to be the first NCKA'er to post a pic of my Remington 870 propped in the Scotty rodholder and with a bunch of ducks and geese bloodying up my tank well!

As for my dove opener, I was working on the Feather River levee (Star Bend section) just south of Yuba City yesterday (I'm an engineer and was performing geophysical tests on the levee)... about a dozen hunters were there at dawn and based on the number of shots not many dove were bagged.

i'm not sure where yet. i was thinking of paddling around some of those snooty duck clubs located on islands in the delta and shooting up a bunch of their ducks. i'll do a little more research and get back to you.

Would love to join you Monday, but I have other commitments.

I usually shoot a ranch in King City for doves, but a couple of weeks ago I called the rancher to say hello and to see what kinds of chores I could do while I was there and he told me not to bother even driving down due to a complete lack of birds. This place is usually stacked full of doves but the rancher said that the ranch has been empty all summer.

As far a waterfowl hunting from a yak goes- its a load of fun. I brush mine out and it makes a great blind for woodies and the like. Please post a heads up and I would love to join some like minded folks. Thank you,

Bill

We went down to Lost Hills for the opener this weekend.  Very slim pickings.  I got four in 1/2 a day.  My son and his friend each got a couple.  Would love to find an area to hunt closer to Santa Rosa.  Lost Hills is 300 miles south on I-5.

Greg

P.S.  The 870 in a modified Scotty holder works great.  My brother and I have been hunting Petaluma from our yaks for a couple of years.

Dove hunting! I had to chase out about 12 hunters from my property saturday morning. They always shoot in the direction of the house and I have been peppered a few times.

There haven't been too many dove around this year,  but a couple of you are welcome to come out here next year if I see more birds around.

6Mhz (who now lives in Iowa) used to duck hunt from his yak all the time.  I'm sure he's got the scoop on the where and how.

I dusted off the Ruger Red Label and went to Patterson off of Hwy 5. Had a limit by noon. Just hanging out by the levee under the almond trees and they fly by. Hey ChuckE I have hunted that place since I was 19 years old and have had some real good bird hunts there. I think IMO the amount of rain we have had hurt the hatch of doves and quail as well. Did you guys check out the creek on the left side of the main road while you were going into Los Padres? Just curious if it held any water. Why didint you hunt on Hunter Ligget since you were down there? My son and I were think of going there also I wish I would have read this hookup this weekend I would have gone there instead. Birds or no birds I like that area down there. Maybe next time. :smt006
