seems like the herring spawn is mainly a word of mouth thing, when it explodes you get out there as fast as you can and capitalize!
Which sounds fun, but what's a good strategy for those of us in the Sacto region? I'm east of Sacto, so about2-3 hours from most Bay locations.  If I 'wait for the word" seems like I'd miss it arriving too late.

I know there are a couple other folks from Sacto who go after them - care to share your strategies? what has worked, what doesn't?

maybe my best strategy is to head out hoping to catch the spawn, and if not, maybe go surf fishing instead.

thanks in advance,
Brian.

Depends on the spawn. The Richmond/Ferry Point spawn sometimes lasts for days. But yes, some of the others are over by the time you get there. It can be frustrating.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Or never happen while your there -- it's hit and miss. Just have to watch the reports and take the opportunities when you have them. Sometimes its just a nice day by the water as yesterday was for me.

Cheers,
Brad

Follow the TLA herring 2021/2022 site and all other local fishing groups for the latest intel. For every one person reporting limits you can assume many other tight lipped fisherman are getting them as well. Your best bet is to get out there when people start reporting LIMITS being caught and be prepared with waders, several nets, sabiki’s, maybe even bring your kayak just in case you got to chase them down. Hell, I even bring my bicycle! That should increase your odds of getting to them when you arrive.

This Sausalito/Richardson bay herring run has been a great opportunity for folks traveling from far, it’s been several days and still going pretty strong!

Wherever you live, If you choose to chase them it’s anybody’s guess whether or not you’ll find them.

I'm hopeful of at least one more big spawn this year.  The Sausalito one was good (but not insane, wide open) and it would be a good sign for herring to have another multiple day spawn.

Come prepared with wetsuit/waders, possibly even kayak.  My best throws this past weekend was wading in waist deep water.

I'm still looking for one more spawn and I will post here if I see it.

Also make sure to really ice the fish down and process as soon as you can, they degrade extremely fast.
