So Sam has this idea that she wants to go backpacking and fly fishing in the Rockies. She started looking on the internet, got some travel guide books, and started planning an itinerary.

Fast forward to today and we are talking about it. “Hey Sam, when was the last time you fly fished?” After a pause the answer was “I still have to learn, but it can’t be that hard”.

No better time to learn than now, and the Russian river is a quick 2 fwy exits away, maybe 15 minutes at the most, so off we went!

We started with the basics and got her doing basic casts. Nothing crazy but learning and improvement were happening! The stretch of river we hit is shallow and flat with basically no cover. Great for learning to cast, but not so much for catching. Throw in barbless only and there were many long distance releases  :smt006

We didn’t catch anything of any size, but did land maybe a dozen smallmouth between us from 3-5 in the afternoon because that’s when the fish bite isn’t it?  :smt002 I did get pictures of the smallest fish we caught!

On a side note I am teaching sans any indicator type fishing. Gotta learn to run before you can crawl, no bobbers for her  :smt044
