Mendo 8/26

Capt. Matt and I hit Lake Mendocino at first light this morning.  We launched at the Southern boat ramp shortly after 7 am and paddled towards the dam.  Matt was trolling a Kastmaster on his ultra retro yellow Eagle Claw fiberglass rod and Mitchell Garcia reel and I was flyfishing.  Ten minutes later we rounded a point near the damn and encountered fish busting the surface.  We glided into the area.  Matt fired off a cast, and as I glided to a stop I started to retrieve my line.  I pulled in a couple of quick strips and wham got hit like a freight train, Bendo !  Matt fires off a second cast and wham; he gets nailed too.  So we got this great double going, both fish make some great runs.  I land mine first, not real big, but it was a good fish, snap a hasty photo and release it.  By this time Matt has his landed; photo op., release and we're on the prowl for the next fish.  We fished hard all morning, chased a few boils around, got a few hits, but didn't land anything else.  And then it all stopped.  This was my first time at Lake Mendocino, and I had a great time.  Only only a couple PB's on the water.  It was a good morning.

Very nice. Kickin Bass (Andy) and I are hitting the lake at around 1830 hours tonight for a little striper action, then a little catfish action.

If I get up in time I'll be there tomorrow morn with my Loomis...

Excellent LCJ! Getting a Striper the first time @ Mendo is something that doesn't happen a lot I hear.. and on a fly to boot! I'm w/ mako1, curious to hear about the fly. Cograts again, sure it was a whole lotta fun.

I was using a Loomis 9'9" 8 wt. Loomis Crosscurrent.  A #6 shooting head, and a short leader.  The only fly I had on all day was a #1 Lefty's Deceiver, white with a red throat (photo to follow).

Hey Lost Coast what a great morning! Your first trip to bendo and you hookup with the fly rod. I was more excited about your fish then mine and the double hookup made it even better. What fly pattern was that again? A Joe's SPECIAL (ha ha)? Fort Ross next week? See Ya.
