Been down here for a couple weeks.   Fished Mission Bay a few times  from the i11s Hobie.   A few spotted Sand Bass, I think I lost one small halibut.  A few head shakes like a halibut and line parted.  Light line.  So went to the 10# braid.   One day offshore on the San Diego out of Seaforth.   Landed 4 yellowfin to 30# and one skipjack.   Bit off on the 5th YF, but by then my 78 year old body, said No Mas.  Gave the skippy away.  Not real hot fishing in Mission Bay.  Might be weather.  Had a weekend of lightning and rain.

Yes, full day.  Leave 5:30 am return 5:30-8 pm.  Depends on catching and how far they go.  We were 30 miles or so at end of fishing.  And they do about 10 knots.  Was $225 including Mexican permit.  If ou have a MX yearly license, save 15 bucks.   Good food aboard.  1/2# cheeseburgers $10, breakfast burritos $10, water, soft drinks and beer available.  My galley bill was $22 and tossed in $40 to include crew tip.  They will fillet fish, and took mine to 5 star fish processor and is $1.30 a pound whole to fillet, vacuums seal in 3.5 mil bags in 1.5 packages.

thanks - good info - did 5 star do a nice job on the fillet? I know boat fillets can often leave a lot of meat behind

5 star did a god job.  Miss the original people who got taken over by the Landings.  Sad story there.  There answered the phones, and had late evening drop off, if not coming from a landing with someone meeting the boat.   Also the price has gone from75 cents a pound whole to $1.30.  they package the collars and the bellies separately.   My tab was $130 and I had a 30, 25, 19, 17.  Picked up yesterday deep frozen.   Had to buy another cooler as other cooler was mostly full with stuff from the 2 weeks in a house down there.  Target had them in stock.  Filled a 38 quart cooler.

I'm stoked we have this Thread :smt001
Even more because I already booked a 4-day Trip aboard the Shogun in July 2022 :smt003

I've been on several multi-day trips with the Royal Star, last trip was an 11-day in December 2020.  I've also amassed a fair amount of gear specific to Long Range Fishing but I don't have nearly the same amount as others

To me, the best part of this style is the simplicity, a hook and lively bait
The next best part is the food and the semi-tropical species that inhabit those southern waters

I WILL ALWAYS recommend the professional fish processors! I cannot do as good of a job, I do not have a vacuum sealer and in my experience the thicker bags pay for themselves protecting the catch in my freezer

Last, I learned early on the price of the trip is NOT the total price:
travel down & back, lodging & parking, galley tab & tip, fish processing & tackle (you try going into those awesome San Diego Tackle stores without buying something)

excellent info, can't think of a better reason to purchase a new cooler!

I don’t have a chamber sealer, just the suck the air out of the bag sealer.   If I only have a fish or two, then I am going to process myself.  Had not used the sealer much over the years, just sat on the garage shelf.  After I got a deal on whole cryovac tritips, I cut the steaks off and vac sealed all.  Keeps them really nice, so am doing the rockfish, etc. now with the sealer.  Keeps them much better than ziplock bags.  Would like a Vacmaser 215, but too much weight, and not really usd enough to justify.  As to cost of a trip, I figure on multi day trips, I estimate at least 50% extra.  When I used to do 7 day on the Independence, the trip was about $3k, $400 tip, some wine I brought along, and then $5-600 processing.  Add 50% for processor now.   I have accumulated gear over the years, so don’t include that in the cost.  Use the boat rods for really heavy stuff.  My heaviest is a Talica 12ii with 65# braid and 50# top shot.  Have landed 100# fish on that.  A nice $350 custom rod I got at Fres Hall show in Long Beach.  I like throwing iron and jigs and poppers, so have a Lexa 400 for that.  The Lexa also works for our local fish.   If you need some long range jigs for wahoo, etc. see me.  I have decided not to long range, so need to get rid of some gear.
