My plan was to take a break from the fishing madness, to meet up with a friend, and to go outrigger paddling down in Santa Cruz. Light gear, fast boats, surfing bumps in open ocean - it has its appeal. However, we were also camping and needed something for dinner.

Pacific Mackerel

These OCs are super light. The hull weighs about 17 pounds, fully rigged with seat, ama and iakos the OC comes in at a mere 24 pounds. Perfect for downwind racing, not ideal for fishing. OC1s flip faster than one can blink an eye and I had just taken a huli (Hawaiian for going over, capsizing). I was drenched and the lense a bit foggy.

Jack Mackerel aka Spanish Mackerel

Hoe - switching sides

The beauty about handlining is that it requires very little gear and once you're done you can carry on with your main quest: paddling hard & riding those sweet ocean swells.

Very cool. I always wonder why people don't troll from those things...

Some do. I think it is more common in warmer waters. Here's a video about catching Giant Trevally from a similar ocean canoe:

Doh I should have asked if you were out there on Saturday OCT2, I think I passed by you guys on my way back into the harbor.  Was in my red AI with single ama, and was going to pass by you and ask if  you had any Grey Poupon  :smt044

Hi Johnny! OC1s are difficult to find as rentals but if you go to an Outrigger Club and ask for a demo you might find something. I once demoed a Kamanu Pueo at the O Kalani Outrigger Club at Encinal/Alameda and another boat, a Kai Wa'a Ares, over at a club in Redwood City. Or - just PM me and we can meet up at Alameda for some outrigger fun.

Thanks Plankton for sharing your “diverse” kayaking adventures
I’ll check with the paddling club down in Monterey

Even cooler. Now you just need to add another outrigger and a sail...

Thanks for sharing Plankton.   I agree they are very difficult.   We have one in our club and I have taken it out and watched others almost knock themselves out getting in them and the outrigger comes flying over and wacks them in the head.   I wish I had videos.   Hats off to those skilled few that are fishing out of them.
