Major props on the fish ID guys. I never would have known.

Shad are a game fish on the east coast. I don't think they ever get too big but big enough to fight hard on light tackle
in a river apparently.

I know some guys here target them in the Sac, but I guess I'm curious if they ever get to fightin' size in tomales?

I've only caught shad on the fly. I was using an 8 wt, and did not feel overgunned when hooked up to 3-5 lb fish. Hen shad get up to 8 lbs if I recall correctly. An 8 wt is certainly not light tackle by freshwater standards, as it can be used to subdue Salmon and Stripers in the 20 lb range without too much work.

I used to flyfish shad with my grandad on the sac and it was a blast

the fish is bony maroni but we used to give our fish to a guy who camped out there with a canning setup

Great info there. I've fished Tomales for years and I too am guilty of passing over the water on the way to Hog Is. Great demo pic of the different species of bait in the bay. I'm sure the halibut don't care much as long as it drifts close enough for em. There have been time when I've seen thousands and thousands of bait fish in there. Never know what your going to get there...
