L. Mendo 8/22 weds AM

Hit the ramp just as the sun was hitting the water and saw a boil to chase right away, just south of Crappie Cove. Pretty soon I noticed Dan's green boat and we both tool into the school about the same time. Dan landed one, and I hooked up on the fly but it came off as it ran towards me. It's hard to quickly take up slack on the flyrod! 8AM and it was over. Lots of chaos tangles today! First cast into the boil with a Zoom turned into a huge birdsnest that i didn't get untangled till an hour later. I should've taken a picture of it, it was a beaut.

I also tried for bass for a little while and got one.
Pics are of favorite flies, current fave jig, and hungry bass, (that up-chucked crawdads).

 Juan it's nice that at least 2 people are gettin into the thick of it! Didn't school start up there yet?

It was great seeing you there again Juan. I hooked a striper from a boil I got into before Juan showed up. There were several good boils while we were out there today. It was cool to watch Juan hook-up with the fly rod! After they shut down, I headed for the dam to try for smallmouth.

After about an hour, another boil started Southwest of the dam. I headed over and cast into it. I had a few hits, but no takers. I was reeling in real fast and a striper hauled butt to catch my Zoom. He was half out of the water chasing it, but he must have seen my boat and got spooked.

Not a bad day with two striper and one smallmouth.

Hey Juan... good work with the flyrod. 

What is your preferred line setup?  Just wondering how deep you need to get the fly in order to get bit... I'd imagine in a boil it doesn't really matter, but what about if they aren't boiling?

My flyrod setup isn't the ideal by any means. It's what I got. Ideal, IMHO, would be an #8 rig with a shooting head. What I am throwing is my salmon rig, a #10 with a slime line shooting head. Slime line is the slowest sinking head I've got. A type II would work in the boils as well as deeper in the water column. Sometimes they're on the ff at 10, 15, 20 feet... with a little patience I get the slime line down there. A weighted fly helps this out too, though the only weight I use is a thicker hook.
It's a 10 weight but it's quality and I love to throw it, can throw it, all day.
I like to pull into a boil and stop the the forward progress of the boat so that I can actually retreive the fly after having slung it. To much forward motion when your fly touches water and you only end up picking your fly out of the water where it landed as you end up coasting to it.
I like flourocarbon tippets and tiny loop knots to the fly to get rid of the "stiff" look.
I'm pretty much looking for busting fish that aggressively chase the fly as it swims like Hell just inches below the surface. Boo-Yah!
I'm there tomorrow morning as I don't have to work just yet.

Nice report Juan. I tried similar style this last weekend. I need to slow way down. The timing of the boils is frustrating to say the least add trying to halt your forward progress to work your fly properly, this is going to be a great compatition !!! Can't wait for tomorrows damage report.

Thanks for the PICS Juan!....That crawdad looks nice and now I see how/why you get all the action! see it's not that hard (beuller/Joel is gonna be proud) that you took some shots of things other than FISH?
 I sure wish them damn things were showin themselves last weekend
