Finally got the weather to run south for some bottom fishing. So much wind I forgot about even going south. Epic weather all day though. Fishing was a little slow for that area, but still with quality fish. Ended up with near limits for four of us, with six lings and two cabbies on top. Released one ling that went over 40" easy and caught several reds that were as wide as they were long.
...got him in the boat he measured six foot long I was so dang impressed I had to write this song...

WOW!!! Incredible photos, CoS! I didn't know you could fish off VAFB without being used for target practice. Where did you launch? How far out were you? Is there anywhere in that area for  kayaks to launch?

Janice- We launched out of Port San Luis and we made 25knts both directions. Epic! We never fished deeper than 75ft and were only shot at once. :smt002 There's guys that surf on the base, but I think you have to be military since 9/11. They used to be able to bring a guest. I'm going to look into that though. The area I fished would be a long paddle, but I'm sure there's something else to be had. Mothership might be the ticket and best possibillity. I might be able to hook up a trip with Patriot sportfishing out of PSL and get a yak crew together. I'll post info when I find out details.

Cool! I lived both in Santa Maria and Nipomo BK (before kayaking) so would enjoy an on-the-water exploration of the coastline down there. A couple years ago I paddled out of Morro Bay and Avila Beach, but that was BKF (before kayak fishing). Mothership fishing sounds even better--I'll watch the hookups.

Cos,

Way to release that ling.  I also saw your post on the PSL website.  Let me know if you do get a mothership trip together- I'd help with it too!

I once mtn biked into Pt Sal (pre 9/11) and we rode our bikes past a downed fence and soon found ourselves surrounded by missle silos.  We quickly turned around and never saw any perssonnel.  It was a bit spooky!
