Greetings all!   I did a solo trip off fort Ross today, worked from 60-130’ with swim baits and shrimp flies.  Nice limit of rockfish, blacks, blues, copper, olive, vermillion and a tiger!   Both sardines and smelt were plentiful and hitting my smallest sabiki well.  I had two smelt get hammered around the slack tide, broke one off, the other let go. I tried salmon trolling for about 30 minutes and found thick jelly fish down to 50’ and spent most of my time unfouling my flasher, downrigger and bait.  Good times.

Nice!

Saw what I believe to be one there while diving. It was hanging out under a rock arch/small cave. Was staring at it trying to assess what it was when I ran out of air. Dove back down and it was gone. Pro dive dude told me they don't come that far north-south. Wow just read a quick wiki blurb... says they've been dated to 160+ y.o.

Right on!
That's the only place I've ever caught one myself.
Beautiful fish.

Sounds like a good day of fishin'.  That Tiger is cool looking!  Never caught one myself, but there was a pic of a big one caught off Outer Tomales/Bodega Bay on Lawsons blog a few days ago.

they've been dated to 160+ y.o.

Yeah, just read about them a little bit myself.  They are pretty rare around Sonoma, and super slow growing/long lived, with a very vulnerable population.  Like stated above, some have been dated to 166years old+.

Whoa... the comments about lifespan and productivity got me looking up stats and wow, just wow.

minimum population doubling time of 14 years.

Lifespan of at least 116 years; except in captivity where that declines to 8 years.

The Tiger shouldn’t have eaten the bait.
