I'm looking for kayak storage in the East Bay, preferably Berkeley / Oakland / Emeryville / Richmond.

I'm familiar with City Kayak in SF and Marina Bay in Richmond, but Marina Bay is full and SF isn't convenient for where I fish.  Everywhere else I have found no longer offers private storage or is full, such as the various clubs at the Berkeley Marina, or the few spots at the Emeryville Marina.

We normally keep our gear at our other home in Sebastopol but we spend most of our time in Emeryville, where we have no storage space.  Although we normally fish on the Sonoma Coast, lately time constraints have limited our chances so we've been down on the Bay more often, hence not wanting to drive 2 hours, to kayak 5 minutes away from our apartment.

Because of the limited access hours and the cost, and bad experiences with theft, not very interested in a traditional storage unit at an Extra Space kind of place.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  Is anyone interested in renting some space in their garage or yard?  Even a spot to drop one or both kayaks for a few days between trips would be great.

Ideally two spots, but even one would be great.  Both are your normal 12.5ft sit-on-top, and they can be stacked on top of each other.
I'd rather be swinging...

Just in case you haven't seen this... this is the spreadsheet maintained by BASK members for kayak storage in the bay area.  It might give you a few new leads: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FnwI4gvYIy_K6eIGdpZE0khw2m4yT-JDboCauq3hGvo/edit#gid=0

Thanks, Tedski!  I did see the BASK sheet and searched this forum a lot too, but unfortunately the BASK thing is fairly out of date, to the point that I've been compiling new data and was going to send it over to them (or just update it myself as I think the google sheet is editable).

I called just about every single place on there that was within my area, and none of them had any available space.  The general sentiment is that COVID exhausted all available storage, and even as things are easing up, people aren't getting rid of their new kayaks.   :smt012

I hear ya.  HMB Kayak Co. was the only option I found feasible for me, but I live in SF, so it's "only" a 40 minute drive to the kayak.  It seems the storage options are cheap enough that people would continue to pay it despite not making use of it, too.  It's a bummer for sure.  Hopefully you find something that works and good on you for compiling fresh/accurate data for the BASK sheet.  Kudos!

Honestly, a storage unit is probably the only rational solution at the moment, beyond someone wanting to make like $100/month to rent me some space in their garage!  :smt003

However, I'm EXTREMELY averse to storage units for a variety of reasons, many of which are purely focused on the resentment I still harbor after $35,000 worth of welding equipment was stolen from my storage unit. After literally years of litigation, I never got a dime back (my younger days).  Folks prey on storage units, hanging out and watching, seeing what people have.  Kayaks are definitely pretty hard to steal, but not that much harder than a few fullsize Millermatic MIG and TIG machines.

It's mostly irrational harbored resentment, I know, but even subsequent rentals I've always found frustrating, especially the limited access hours.  It's not conducive to an early start if you can't even load up until 7am!

Nothing irrational over resentment for $35K of welding equipment stolen! Special place in hell hopefully for the thief that did that.

sorry to hear about your welding equipment.

i do have renter's insurance as everyone should.  it's a small price to pay for a peace of mind.

the hours can be inconvenient, but i pick up the kayak the day before fishing day even if they were open 24/7.  kayak get's locked onto the truck rack and into the apt parking garage they go for an easy morning.

Oh trust me, the lesson was learned haha, but why tempt fate?!!  :smt003  Mind you this was about 16 years ago, I was building a lot of Jeeps and long arm kits at the time.

Unfortunately, our parking garage in Emeryville is so low that the only way I can fit with the kayaks on top is to air down my tires to like 18psi and go 1mph, and that's with like every accessory and the rudders removed.  Which is what we've currently been doing, lol.

As sad as it sounds, it's tough to find time to get on the water, and having to spend that extra effort or dealing with that extra inconvenience is often enough to thwart my adventures or shift me towards doing some shore fishing and avoiding the headache.  I'd like minimize that as best I can, but I'm late to the party it seems.

As you can see, the kayaks are as low as they possibly can get.
