44lbs 5 oz from New Zealand. Crazy. Sounds like it was caught below a fish farming operation and probably had been feeding on the loose food from there for years. What an absolute toad!

I had the chance to fish those canals a few years back.  10-20lb fish are considered small over there and often release them.

Yes, the hydro canals near Twizel on the south island. The fish there are famously huge, grotesquely obese. When I travel, I tend not to bring an arsenal of fly rods, and my 4 piece 5 weight wouldn't be up to that task.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
