Went out to Ft. Ross this morning.  To sum it up...Windy.

But, on my way home I stopped at Doran Park.  I stripped the scottys and stuff off the yak, suited up and went playing in the surf.  Now, Doran Park is not the mavericks.  But, a Tarpon 120 isn't a surfboard either.  I haven't had as much fun in a long time.  There were wipe-outs galore and quite a few backwards (stern first) landings (Yes, it works).   Most launchings involved a lap full of breaking waves.  My only goal was to have fun.  I had no gear to loose and  figgered I probably wouldn't break me or the boat.  All-in-all, I would highly recommend taking your yak out for some fun if the fishing doesn't pan out.

Of course it's OK!! I have two kayaks just for that sort of fun, why not? It is also good practice for those landings after serious fishing when you don't want to do the el rollo up onto the beach.
In my Tarpon 160i I can turn around 180 degrees, put my feet in the milk crate and lay down resting my head on the water bottle holder and nap. Good for when the fish are not biting, just hoping some seal doesn't come and nap on me. The bigger threat  of course is my son, who will wait till I'm just dozing off and then flip me over.

It's not only OK but should be mandatory! There is no better way to learn to handle your surf that to get out and play it. It can be pretty fun as well.
