There is a pinnacle straight out of the cove and a little south, maybe 1/2 mile out or so.  Use your ff to find it and you should find some lings.  I use the standard irons and swimbaits plus some squid or ab guts or trimmings.  Also the point at the north side of Gerstle cove extends out but if there is any swell it breaks huge on there.  Fishing the edge of that structure last fall I had a limit of blues in no time.  That trip the water was very murky and the wind was strong and I did not get any legal lings but the big blues were non stop.  I have also had good luck in the small cove and kelp beds north of Salt Point.  Before I knew what I was doing or what I had, I believe I hooked a striper there.  From Gerstle, make sure you are outside the reserve boundary.  It is easy to see based on bright paint on the rocks and signs.  Good luck and let me know what works for you.  We will be up there in October.  Stillwater Cove near there is also good, I fished there once and got my wife her fist fish.  She could not care less but she did it for me  :smt008 .  I have never fished at Ft. Ross but I hear good things about it.

Ben,
I pretty much head for the point on the north side of the cove. From there up is good for rockies. There isn't any sand in the area as far as I know. the closest sand is in Stump Beach which is a couple miles north. I'v e never fished it there, only walked out to it. The blues are in closer and the reds and lings are out further. Watch for the sleeper wash rock on the point. Depending on the tide and swell it can sneak up on you.

For the camping I like stillwater cove campground. It seems to be in a small banana belt, much warmer there .
Hope you kill where ever you are.
As for the killer mate who fishes and camps good job!!!!! I am also blessed with one of those rare keepers myself.
